First Climb with Katanas

I'm really impressed and surprisingly so. I thought I would have to work my way into these shoes. Don't get me wrong my feet were in a lot of pain but when I was on the wall, I could trust my feet like I never have before. Here is to working on the next level.

La Sportiva Katana Rock Climbing Shoe

I have reached the point in my climbing to get serous about shoes. I started off with a pair of Evolv DEFY VTRs which are a great beginner shoe but when getting a bit more technical falls short or falls off the wall. Last night I met up with JR at the EMS in SoHo to take a look at and try on some more performance oriented climbing shoes.

The Sportiva Katanas won out over the La Sportiva Miura VS and the 5.10 Team. The Teams look like  a great dedicated bouldering shoes. If I were looking for just a shoe to boulder in these would be high on my list. The spending hours on my feet comfort factor lacks with these though and I'm looking for a good all arounder. The Miuras are great however the sizing for my feet seemed off. They went from being too big and the next half size down too small. I mean painfully too small. I even tried EMS's practice wall and my feet were on fire. I put on the same size Katanas and bingo that did the trick.

They still hurt but not as bad. My toe knuckles are tight agents the front so the fit is right. I tried them on the practice wall and it was amazing. I am warming them up now for tonight. I'm sure the Miuras would stretch out fine but when it's right it's right. I'm looking forward to tonight at BKB!

I'll write a full review in a couple of months. Stay tuned.

Top roping session

I have been hitting BKB for the last few weeks working on bouldering problems. I took a two months off the get acclimated with my new son. Today my friend JR showed up with an extra harness and put me on a 5.8 to start. I did it. It was not pretty but I got to the top and felt the rush you only get from rope climbing. The next 5.8 I nailed clean. Then did a 5'8+ that completely kicked my ass. After a little rest I nailed another 5.8 clean then a 5.10 down and dirty. Needless to say, todays session was a real confidence builder. My goal is to climp 5.10s cleanly and start working on 5.11s in two weeks. Game on!

New Fin

What Happened to Mollusk BK?

I know a lot of us are wondering what happened to Mollusk BK after closing from their River St location in WB Brooklyn. For me that shop means a lot. It's a real place for the NYC surf community to gather and celebrate surfing in all of it's forms. There is something to be said when you can walk into a shop and talk about boards with out feeling any sales pressure. Just stoke for surfing and the art of shaping.

Mollusk BK is done and the new shop will open as Pilgrim Surf and Supply. I think the name is perfect for a NYC shop. Most of us New Yorkers are pilgrims in some way and we all make the pilgrimage to the ocean whether it be Rochaway or a far off destination is search of surf!

I was cursing the NYNJ Surf forums and found this today. Chris, the owner chimed in on What's up with Mollusk.

Hello Everyone.

Thanks for all the kind words and your patience while we get the doors back open at our new Location on North 3rd and Wythe.
A few things have changed such as our name and the size of the store but we're still hosting a wide (and wider) board selection, more wetsuits and a good selection of hearty costal outerwear and accessories. We've been working hard on the space and think its going to function even better for our community of surfers in NYC.
Our old partners in Mollusk are still in our family and we'll hopefully continue a dialog with the west coast through them. Pilgrim Surf and Supply is going to be more locally relevant than the previous shop and I hope everyone here will come out and say hello when we open the doors...which will hopefully be in mid to late January. (yes, i know... just about the worst time to reopen a surf shop in NYC!) I'm super excited to see you guys again..so many friends have been made through our little shop and I miss you all sincerely!
I'll be sure to post our opening Party date very soon..I think we'll have a couple very special guests at that too...

You guys make it easy to love our little community of surf.

Stoked!

Happy holidays and see you soon!

Chris
